Winter skin by Abigail Keenan

Journal is starting a new series ‘Ask the Expert’, where The Well Urban Day Spa’s resident expert Rachael Collins will be on hand to answer your skincare and wellness questions. First up is Rachael’s top tips on winter skincare.

When faced with cold harsh temperatures our skin finds it hard to cope. When the cold wind hits our stratum corneum (outer layer of skin) it strips it of the moisture needed to keep our skin hydrated.

When this happens little gaps are formed in the outer layer of our epidermis and water starts to escape which leaves us with dry, flaky and dehydrated skin. Without the protective barrier of the moisture, our skin becomes red and sensitive, leaving it exposed to irritants.

So how do we combat this? Always ensure you are drinking plenty of water, at least 2 litres a day. Supplements like fish oil will support and nourish the skin from the inside out, take at least 1 for every 10 kilos of your body weight and make sure it’s a good brand with no fillers or additives.

Topically you can use Circ-Cell’s ABO+ Serum which is more oxygenated than your red blood cells. I love Circ-Cell because they use innovative techniques, combined with unusual ingredients to create real results that are noticeable quickly.

After applying the serum use Circ-Cell’s Fermented Face Oil and apply generously over. If you find your skin is dry and flaky I recommend using Pure Enzymes by Cosmedix to assist the skin in the renewal process. Cosmedix is an important brand to get to know, their combination of natural ingredients and Nobel prize winning chemistry, gives amazing results!
